The golden lion tamarin is a threatened species as a result of the destruction of its habitat in Atlantic woodlands. There are only 3,000 left in the wild. Any golden lion tamarin infant is reason for joy for this reason.
The Bristol Zoo just welcomed a golden lion tamarin into the world. The newborn creature is incredibly little. From head to tail, it is only four inches long.
This monkey has a wicked sense of humour. It was photographed nuzzling up to and smiling with its parents.
Photographer, a frequent zoo visitor, stated, “The gorgeous but endangered newborn golden lion tamarin was outside riding on its parents’ backs.”
Are you curious about the origins of the name “golden lion tamarin” for these monkeys? It refers to their lion-like manes in miniature. Take a closer look at these photos to see what I mean.
Bristol Zoo now contains five golden lion tamarins, including Missy and Dourado, the parents of the newborn tamarin.
A health check for the young tamarin will take 6 months, according to the zoo spokeswoman.
The infant tamarin stays with its father for the entire day. It simply returns to Mom for feedings.
“It’s common for tamarin parents to take an active role in looking after youngsters,” Shani Ratnayake, large mammals’ senior keeper, said. “But Dourado is doing a lot more than usual.”
