Before falling to the ground, a newborn elephant was seen on camera taking his first steps that resembled Bambi. While visiting Mwinilunga Safaris in Mana Pools, Zambia, wildlife photographer Caroline Deschuymere of Belgium noticed the baby elephant.
When an elephant entered the premises and gave birth, Caroline was in the tent. As he fumbled to maintain his balance on his legs, the baby elephant could be seen moving his tail and twisting his trunk. The calf hesitated as he made his first stride before falling to the ground.
The elephant tried once again but tripped over his trunk and his mother continued walking. The elephant attempted to stand up as his feet wobbled like Bambi from Disney on ice. But it didn’t take him long to get the hang of it and start following his mother.
According to Caroline, normally she would start searching for lions or African wild dogs first in the morning because they are more active then. But for some reason that morning, she kept seeing small baby elephants, so she chose to stick with them.
Elephants frequently visit the camp during that time of day to eat and drink, and it is always enjoyable to simply observe them. Suddenly, there was a disturbance. She wasn’t sure what it was at first, but then she realized the cow had just given birth.
The infant spent more than an hour trying to get up, but his legs remained bent, so he first needed to learn how to stretch them. Then he had to figure out how to balance them; seeing him struggle to stay upright, Caroline couldn’t stop giggling. He had an unsteady appearance. But in the end, he succeeded, and his older sibling was quite encouraging.
