Alejandro Garnacho is one of the increasing number of good news stories at Manchester United this season.

The 18-year-old moved to England in 2020, having previously been part of the youth system at Atletico Madrid. He was born and brought up in the Spanish capital, originally being in the ranks of Getafe.

Garnacho then found the world at his feet, with Manchester United moving in to sign him from Los Rojiblancos, and Argentina trying to tempt him away from representing the country of his birth.

Both proved successful, and the youngster was called up by the South American country in March 2022. There were even suggestions he narrowly missed out on the victorious World Cup squad.

With 21 senior appearances so far this season, Garnacho is clearly having a breakthrough period. His contract expires in June 2024, with the option for a further year.

Sunday’s edition of AS reports he’s on the verge of signing a deal lasting until 2028. They make it clear this is their own information, presumably from local Madrid sources, and say only image rights need to be agreed.

AS state the agreement is ‘practically complete’ and both parties hope to have it finalised in ‘a matter of days’. They even say ‘the announcement is imminent’, and make it clear that Garnacho had multiple clubs circling around him.

One of those was Real Madrid, with Los Blancos even holding a meeting with the player’s representatives.

Despite that, Manchester United have been successful.
