If you’re a parent, it’s likely that you’ve heard your children say something similar to this or perhaps just make the sound of a “clomp” when they fall asleep again. Everybody knows how challenging it can be to get out of bed in the morning, and getting your kids out of bed may be especially difficult! This mother elephant’s gentle awakening of her young elephant, who is definitely not an early bird, demonstrates what a devoted mother she is.
While on vacation, Conrad Cramer spent some time observing the family group of elephants that were hiding from the sun. Elephants rarely rest on their backs and sleep, thus the image was incredibly serene. Conrad sat and watched, his curiosity piqued.
When the matriarch finally appeared to be rousing, Conrad grabbed his camera and began recording. He was fortunate to catch her carefully reawakening the infant.
As the older calf behind the baby breaths in and out, you can see the little clouds of dust rising. You can also see how much the baby wants to continue sleeping despite mom’s gentle prodding, but she eventually manages to wake the baby up. The older sibling is then gently awakened by the younger calf, who appears to be saying, “It’s time to go!” This is entertaining to watch.
What a breathtaking sight to see these gentle giants awaken and depart in unison, retreating into the undergrowth and leaving only their footsteps as a reminder of their presence.
