David De Gea has acted “offensively” that angered Leeds’ fans

The Manchester United shot-stopper sparked fury from the Leeds fans closest to his goal when Alejandro Garnacho bagged Erik ten Hag’s side’s second goal of the game

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea angered the Leeds fans behind his goal at Elland Road when Alejandro Garnacho secured all three points for the Red Devils.

United took on Leeds for the second time in just four days and bettered Wednesday’s 2-2 result with a 2-0 victory on Leeds’ own patch. Goals from Marcus Rashford and Garnacho eventually broke what was a resilient Leeds backline up to that point, but De Gea’s celebrations for the second sparked fury among the home faithful.

Once Garnacho’s well-taken finish had hit the back of the net to all but guarantee victory, De Gea’s emotions appeared to get the better of him as he wildly fist-pumped and jumped in the air out of pure joy United had won the game.

The celebrations were met with fury from the Leeds fans close by, but they could do little more than boo, jeer and hurl obscenities while De Gea helped his side continue their fine form this season.

The result briefly took United second before Manchester City made light work of Aston Villa in the game that followed this one, meaning the Red Devils can hardly be ruled out of title contention at this stage.

It was a special afternoon for United’s goalkeeper, who has now made 400 Premier League appearances for the club since his arrival in 2011.

De Gea discussed the atmosphere inside Elland Road and how United coped with it after the game, telling MUTV : “They have 10 to 15 minutes where they create a couple of chances, they put pressure on us, which was not easy. It is not easy here.

“I made a couple of good saves and then the team scored a great goal. The atmosphere here, with the fans was amazing, so [it was] a special win and I am so, so happy.”

The United hero went on to add how he knew that whoever struck first was going to be vital to the overall outcome of the contest.

“We knew with the first goal, keeping a clean sheet and scoring the first goal would be massive for us,” he added. “A perfect cross from Luke Shaw, who is playing really well. And Rashy [Rashford] is on fire. A lot of goals, helping the team, running, pressing. I think he is playing at the top level.

“[It was a] massive, massive goal for us and after that, I think we controlled the game.”
