A little black dress is certainly a classic worth investing in—it didn’t earn its nickname, the LBD, for nothing!—but it’s not necessarily a statement. On the red carpet, celebrities often wear head-to-toe black at a premiere or screening when they’re going for a more reserved or understated look, but not Anne Hathaway. Today, the actor made an appearance at the 73rd annual Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin, Germany to promote her new film She Came to Me. Her bold black look by Alaïa was anything but demure. In fact, it totally stole the show.
Styled by Erin Walsh, Hathaway opted for Alaïa designer Pieter Mulier’s hooded long-sleeve dress with a ruched leather waistline, punctuated with a silver zip-up detail. The late Azzedine Alaïa was famous for such hooded silhouettes—the iconic Grace Jones was a fan—and Mulier has been keeping the signature shapes alive during his helm at the house. His fall 2023 collection, for instance, featured one-sleeved hooded gowns (Hathaway’s is from spring 2023). Paired with black strappy heels with a sculptural golden heel, Hathaway’s ensemble was the right mix of timeless and avant-garde. And with fellow stars like Jenna Ortega and Rihanna on board with the haute hoodie, it’s safe to say it’s fast becoming a Hollywood trend. We welcome it!
