In the main action of the night, it was Carragher’s Liverpool that had suffered a damaging defeat, one week after Tottenham fell to a 1-0 loss away to AC Milan, and that only prompted the defender to launch an assault on the reigning European champions. Richards however was less interested in the seven-goal thriller before them at Anfield.
Having gone 2-0 up inside 14 minutes Liverpool crumbled, conceding five goals, including three unanswered in the second half, to fall leave themselves with an uphill task in the second leg. After the game, Carragher was glowing about the two standout players for him but the conversation took a twist halfway through.
Speaking on US channel CBS, Carragher said, “In terms of Luka Modric and Karim Benzema we’re looking at two of the greats of the Champions League era, not even their own era. When you look at the greats from the Barcelona teams and the AC Milan teams at the start of the Champions League these are players that are absolute greats.”
This then led to a discussion with Richards about his previous comments on Kane regarding needing trophies to have a successful career.
“We had this discussion about Harry Kane and Benzema,” Carragher started before Richards jumped in to reply. “We’re not going there,” he said. The story that followed was greeted with comedic laughter in the studio.
JC: “What you were saying is, a couple of weeks ago you were critical of Kane. What did that fella say to you in the gym? Tell us the story.”
MR: “So, we’re going to a place in town called Jab, it’s a boxing place. I’ve got my vest on and I’m feeling great, like a million dollars. This guy is about 5″10 and I’ve seen someone out of the corner of my eye waiting. I’m going down the stairs, I’m in the mode, left to right, jogging on the spot, you know how it goes.
“Then the bloke stops me on the stairs and says, ‘Why are you talking about Harry Kane for?’ I was like, ‘me!? What have I said about Harry Kane?’ and he says, ‘everyone is going to remember Harry Kane, nobody is going to remember your one Premier League title.’
[What happened next?] “I had a word alright. I don’t condone violence.”
Kane has been linked with a move away from Spurs in order to pursue a greater chance at winning trophies elsewhere.
