Quantumania Director Peyton Reed reveals how the post-credits scene in the film was borrowed directly from the pages of Avengers #267.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania director Peyton Reed offered some more information about decisions made for the film’s post-credit scene featuring the Council of Kangs.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Reed confirmed that the Council of Kangs scene was directly borrowed from the pages of 1986’s Avengers #267. Drawn by John Buscema and Tom Palmer and written by Roger Stern, Avengers #267 is where the Council first appeared in Marvel Comics. “I directed the first one which is the Council of Kangs scene,” he said. “We did this, in terms of, there’s a very famous comics panel where you see the Council of Kangs and all these variants in there. We definitely wanted to recreate that and give Jonathan [Majors] a starting point to deal with, ‘Who do we bring in of the variants?’ There’s Rama Tut and there’s a character based on Scarlet Centurion and, of course, Immortus. We wanted to go full Kurasawa Ran with it and make it really operatic.”

The same post-credits scene, which teased the future of the Multiverse Saga, also recreated another iconic panel from Marvel Comics. In particular, a panel from 1988’s Avengers #292, “The Dragon In The Sea!” written by Walter Simonson with art by Buscema and Palmer. In the same interview, Reed praised Jonathan Majors performance as Kang the Conqueror and how he was able to portray several different versions of the character.
“There are some different Kangs and part of it was coming up with different, quick versions,” Reed said. “It was sitting down with Jonathan and with [executive producer] Stephen Broussard and talking about like, ‘This one could be perceived as this Kang and this Kang.’ But what we really wanted to show was just the totality of it, how many variants there might be, when we get that final panel.” He added, “With Jonathan, of course, that’s his sweet spot, playing all these different versions of Kang.”

Kang’s Future in the MCU After Quantumania
Majors stars in Quantumania as Kang, the film’s main antagonist and the newest supervillain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a previous interview, Majors elaborated on the nature of his character and what role Kang will play in the future of the MCU. “Kang is a time-traveling supervillain who is also a Nexus being, which leads to this idea of variants,” he said. “There are multiple versions of Kang. ‘Versions’ being ‘variants.'” Majors explained that Kang had the power to occupy different universes and multiverses since they are all different beings.
While Quantumania set Majors up as the next big bad of the MCU, his next confirmed appearance will be as Kang and his variants in the fifth Avengers film, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Kang Dynasty will also be penned by Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness and helmed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton. No further details about the ensemble film have been released by Marvel or Disney.
