BATUMI, Georgia — Selena Gomez is mostly known for her Disney roles and music career. But not many people know that she is very passionate about charity work. She supports about 16 organizations, from UNICEF to Make-A-Wish Foundation. Take a closer look at how her philanthropy affected the world.
UNICEF
Since 2009, Selena has actively supported the rights of the world’s most vulnerable children by taking part in a wide range of campaigns, events and programs on behalf of UNICEF USA. Here are some of them:
- Trick-or-Treat – In 2010, for the third year in a row, Selena returned to her role as National Spokesperson for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Through social media, she encouraged teenagers to donate. She also auctioned personal items to CharityBuzz.com, designed a Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF t-shirt and participated in a small concert in Los Angeles. With Selena’s help, UNICEF raised $4 million.
- #SahelNOW – In April 2012, Selena endorsed UNICEF’s campaign that addressed the nutrition crisis in the Sahel region of West and Central Africa. She advocated a global campaign “Sound the Alarm” on Facebook and Twitter to fundraise money and stop a million children from dying from malnutrition.
- Charity Concert Benefitting UNICEF – In 2012 Selena performed her second Charity Concert in support of UNICEF at the House of Blues in West Hollywood. Big Time Rush and Noah Guthrie joined her onstage. At the end of the night, they raised more than $200,000 to support UNICEF in providing lifesaving foods, water, medications and schooling to children around the world.
The Rare Impact Fund
Selena Gomez does not only support other causes but also created her own fund – The Rare Impact Fund. The main idea is to help with providing access to mental health care for everyone who needs it. The Rare Impact Fund receives 1% of every sale of Rare Beauty products in addition to extra contributions from different foundations, business partners and community members.
Selena has a goal – during the next 10 years, she intends to raise $100 million. That money will be going to services that are providing mental health care and education for young people.
