Former James Bond star George Lazenby has hinted that “ballsy” star Margot Robbie could become the first female to portray the iconic 007 role after Daniel Craig
George Lazenby has tipped that the keys to James Bond’s Aston Martin could soon be handed over to Aussie babe Margot Robbie.
Lazenby, 80, who starred as 007 in the 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service also revealed that he would prefer to see a female take on the role of Bond, aptly named Jane Bond.
Margot, 29, is the same age as George was when he was cast as 007 after meeting producer Albert R. Broccoli by chance in a barbershop following a string of modelling gigs after the 80-year-old moved to London and started working as a model.
In a candid chat with The Sun, Lazenby revealed his hopes for the future of the SIS’ most famous agent.

“I would rather see a woman on screen than a man, so it might be a good idea having a woman play James Bond… Jane Bond. I think it’s a good idea.
“I mean, why not?” recalled the actor.
Lazenby, from New South Wales, Aus, added: “There’s an Australian actress who’s over here that I was just listening to on the television today, Margot Robbie.

“She comes across like she’s very confident… if you can pull that off, people will believe you.”
Should Margot be cast as 007, she will become the second non-European to be cast as the official agent, behind George.

However, his claims come two years after he had rejected the idea of a female taking on the role of Bond.
In 2018 he said: “It wouldn’t work. If you hit a woman, you get arrested.”
During his rare interview, he also claimed that James Bond producer Barbara Broccolo would be able to turn to mixed martial arts in order to find a female 007.

“Some UFC [Ultimate Fighting Championship] fighters are women. They’re capable. I wouldn’t like to meet one in a dark alley.”
Wirral-born Daniel Craig, 52, is set to step into the iconic role for the final time in No Time To Die, which is set to be released in November 2020.
Bookies have also revealed that stars such as Tom Hardy, Richard Madden and James Norton are currently favourites to take on the role.
