The Guardians’ desperate search for Gamora continues in GOTG Vol 3, but her story is destined to end in tragedy thanks to one Multiverse detail.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will close the book on this iteration of the titular team, bringing an end to one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most beloved franchises, and possibly saying goodbye for good to Gamora. The upcoming sequel, set to hit theaters in May, is expected to kill off some, if not all, of the original Guardians of the Galaxy, ending the franchise on a tragic note. While certain Guardians appear to be in more trouble than others, one particular member of the team may actually be destined to die due to the unalterable laws of the Multiverse.
Gamora was Thanos’s favorite daughter, leading the Mad Titan to sacrifice her on Vormir during the events of Avengers: Infinity War in exchange for the Soul Stone. However, a variant of Gamora from an alternate timeline arrived on Earth-616 during the Battle of Earth in Avengers: Endgame, becoming the only member of Thanos’s army to survive. The Guardians have spent the last several years searching for this parallel version of Gamora, with whom they will finally reunite in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, though she is not technically their Gamora as she was at an earlier point in her timeline before meeting the other Guardians.
The MCU’s Multiverse Rules Mean Gamora May Have To Die In GOTG3
Gamora being alive in Guardians 3 poses a problem for her continued existence in the MCU. As the Earth-838 variant of Reed Richards explained during the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a variant’s prolonged exposure to an alternate universe risks sparking an incursion, a Multiversal phenomenon that can lead to the destruction of one or both universes involved. Multiverse of Madness proved just how delicate the Multiverse can be in this regard, with even the presence of a variant in another universe risking an incursion. As such, Gamora’s mere existence puts all of the 616 reality in grave danger of being wiped out entirely.
There are many MCU events that may have caused incursions, each of which is potentially meant to lead to major crossovers like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Gamora, however, seems to have little part in the larger Multiverse Saga, making it more likely that the danger she poses to the Multiverse will be snuffed out before it can become a larger issue to her new reality. The Gamora variant in Guardians 3 cannot be allowed to survive in the 616 reality for much longer and may be killed before her existence causes an incursion that would destroy everything around her.
Gamora’s Second Death Could Explain The End Of The Guardians
James Gunn has teased Guardians 3‘s high death count ahead of the film’s release, making sure that audiences prepare themselves to lose several members of the franchise’s main cast before the credits roll. While characters like Drax and Rocket have been heavily rumored to die, it would appear that even Gamora isn’t safe, despite her recent resurrection in Endgame. Although it may seem rather repetitive and unnecessary for Gamora to be killed off twice in the span of a few years, her second death could have a major impact on each of her companions and on the very future of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It only makes sense to end Gamora’s arc in Guardians 3 if it has a larger effect on the Guardians of the Galaxy as a whole. The film is already confirmed to be the last adventure starring these particular characters, and there must therefore be an adequate reason that this iteration of the Guardians will no longer exist by the end of the movie. Losing Gamora for a second time after coming so close to getting her back would be enough to break the Guardians, especially Peter Quill and Nebula, who were particularly close to her, giving the team an appropriately tragic end to their time together.
Is Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Zoe Saldaña’s Last MCU Movie?
The film is very likely the last appearance for Zoe Saldaña in the MCU, especially given the actress’s recent comments about feeling “artistically stuck” between major Hollywood franchises like Marvel and James Cameron’s Avatar series, in which she plays Neytiri. While the next film in the GOTG franchise will attempt to resolve Gamora’s missing storyline taking place after Endgame, its more poignant responsibility will be bringing the character’s ongoing arc to a satisfying conclusion. Given her long tenure in the MCU and the conclusive nature of the upcoming Guardians film, Saldaña seems to be one of the likeliest cast members to take her final bow in the upcoming movie.
Although Gamora’s Infinity War arc makes a Guardians 3 death seem unlikely, the behind-the-scenes news regarding the upcoming Guardians film and Saldaña’s tenure in the MCU certainly seem to signal that a tragic fate may be awaiting the former daughter of Thanos. The very rules by which the Multiverse Saga is built dictate that the alternate universe version of Gamora present in the MCU cannot be allowed to survive for much longer, or else risk causing an incursion that could destroy the 616 reality entirely, a storyline that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 must definitively resolve.
