An exciting archaeological discovery in Iceland may prove the existence of the most mythical sea creature – mermaids. A team of leading archaeologists has just found a mysterious set of bones on the Icelandic coast dating back to the Middle Ages. Scientists believe this could be the first physical evidence of the existence of mythical half-human, half-fish creatures.
The found bones comprise a pelvic bone and a pair of long thigh bones, resembling human bones. However, the lower ends of the thigh bones end in membranous toes, like in seals – a clear sign that they belonged to an aquatic creature. Could this be the first physical evidence that mermaids really existed? The fascinating truth about the mysterious world beneath the ocean is once again being uncovered.
The archaeological team includes leading experts from the University of Iceland and the Norwegian Institute of Archaeology. They have thoroughly studied the bones and concluded that they belong neither to humans nor to any known marine animals.
Initial measurements and chemical analyses indicate that these bones date back to around 800-1000 AD. This fits with the period when mermaid legends became popular in Northern Europe.
If confirmed, this would be the most compelling evidence to date for the existence of the half-human, half-fish mermaids described in legends and folklore. It could rewrite scientific hypotheses about human evolution.
Scientists hope to continue studying the DNA and other chemical traces on the bones to find more clues about the origin and species of this mysterious creature. They predict more exciting discoveries about the mysterious mermaid species.
