Bepo manages to go into Sulong without a full moon, and it’s thanks to Chopper’s medicine — but that may actually just be a rumble ball.
The world of One Piece is populated not only by humans but also by other races, and each race has its own respective strengths and weaknesses. For the Minks, that’s their ability to naturally produce electricity and their trump card: Sulong. However, Sulong is limited by the fact that it only manifests during a full moon — or at least, that’s what’s commonly known. In Chapter 1081, Chopper manages to overcome this limitation after Bepo achieves Sulong form simply by taking what the Straw Hats’ resident doctor gives him.
Trafalgar Law’s Heart Pirates find themselves in a pickle as they’re ambushed by the Blackbeard Pirates just as they leave Wano. The devious Emperor utilizes numerous underhanded tactics to take down the Heart Pirates. While he manages to take the upper hand, Law still manages to put up a fight, and Chapter 1081 finally reveals the conclusion to their battle.
Bepo Goes Sulong to Save His Captain
Chapter 1081 sees the Heart Pirates defeated by the Blackbeard Pirates. Just like what happened to Kid’s crew, the Emperor splits their ship in two. Blackbeard then proceeds to mock the fallen pirates, telling Law that he would offer his body to the hundred pirates he previously messed with. Just then, Bepo remembers a certain exchange he had with Chopper. The polar bear Mink recalls Chopper telling him that the medicine was still a prototype, and the reindeer cannot guarantee its effects. However, since it’s a do-or-die situation, Bepo places his fate on it.
It turns out that the medicine does work. Bepo manages to undergo Sulong transformation even without the full moon’s presence. He then uses his acquired strength to push back the Emperor, snatch his captain and jump into the sea. Even with Law’s pleas to return and save the others, Bepo continues to swim. The Mink tells his captain to trust the crew, especially since they’ve come from the frozen port in the North.
The Secret Medicine May Just Be Chopper’s Improved Rumble Ball
While the medicine that Chopper gave Bepo is still unknown, avid fans of One Piece are already well aware of Chopper’s Rumble Balls. These balls allow Chopper to access his numerous “points” pre-timeskip and enter Monster Point post-timeskip. That said, it doesn’t give him new abilities — it simply allows him to bring out his Devil Fruit’s latent abilities. Chopper eventually being able to utilize his various “points” without the aid of Rumble Balls is proof of this, and this logic may be the base concept of the medicine he gives Bepo.
The Sulong form is an innate ability of the Minks that allows them to transform into powerful, wolf-like beasts with enhanced physical abilities. However, this form is only accessible to the Minks during a full moon. Even then, it’s a difficult and potentially dangerous transformation to achieve since there’s a risk of going berserk. Still, that doesn’t mean it cannot be mastered. Numerous notable Minks — including Dogstorm and Cat Viper — have achieved this. Just like how the Rumble Ball brings out Chopper’s Devil Fruit abilities, Bepo’s medicine brings out the Minks’ latent abilities. The improvements, of course, are to make the Rumble Balls compatible with Minks rather than Chopper’s Devil Fruit.
