Haaland’s chip saw him overtake the previous record tally of 34 – set by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 campaigns respectively.
The 22-year-old received a guard of honour from his team-mates as he left the pitch – later describing it as “really painful” as his pals whacked him on the back.
Once back in the dressing room, Haaland thanked his team-mates in a brief speech.
He said: “I don’t know what more to say but I’m really happy and thank you guys so much.”
Haaland then smiled cheekily as he was applauded by his Man City pals.
Asked about the guard of honour while appearing on Sky Sports after the match, the striker said: “It was a nice feeling… like every single goal I score.
“Especially to win the game is also really important for anyone.”
While being shown the moment he ran through the guard of honour, Haaland added: “And it was really painful, this guard of honour as you can see there now.
“Everyone hit me in the back so it was really painful but it was a nice thing and I’m really happy.”
Haaland later took to social media to thank his fans, writing: “𝟯𝟱 Premier League goals.
“A big thank you to everyone for the support, nothing happens without you all, we don’t stop here!”
Haaland still has five matches left in which to extend his record even further.
After the game, manager Pep Guardiola gushed: “He is a joy. Everyone is happy to have him with us.
“This record will be broken sooner or later, maybe by him in the future, because he will score a lot of goals.
“But Andy Cole and Alan Shearer are incredible strikers and I think he deserved it.”
