“That’s all we could get from him”: Ryan Reynolds Refused to Return for Potential Blade 4 After Wesley Snipes Made Him Feel ‘Unwanted’ During Filming

Comic book movies and Ryan Reynolds is one of the most renowned duos in the industry. Before being widely popular as Deadpool, the Canadian star tried his luck in a bunch of superhero movies. But sadly, none of those projects worked out like the Merc-with-a-mouth. One such movie is the 2004’s Blade: Trinity where the Wade Wilson fame was seen as the Hannibal King.

Prior to the recent reboot announcement by the MCU, Wesley Snipes often stated about being open for Blade 4. But following the reception of the third part and Snipes’ controversial behavior on set, his co-stars didn’t reflect a similar thought. Ryan Reynolds was also a part of the crowd that couldn’t show a positive response on their return to a potential sequel.

Ryan Reynolds on his return as Hannibal King

Along with Green Lantern and X-Men: Origins, Ryan Reynolds was also spotted in Blade: Trinity as Hannibal King. But according to the actor, he no longer wants to return in any potential sequel to the Wesley Snipes feature due to many reasons. Snipes’ behavior on the set was one of the main reasons why The Proposal actor wanted to back out.

Wesley Snipes reportedly presented very bad behavior on set mainly with the director David S. Goyer. Many sources state that the Demolition Man actor didn’t even talk with the director and also with most of his co-stars. It was reported that most of the time, Snipes didn’t agree to shoot several scenes and also talked with Goyer via post-it notes. In an interview, Patton Oswalt who played Hedges in the 2004 movie also claimed that the actor called his co-star Ryan Reynolds a “cracker”. He added that the Eric Brooks actor also avoided Reynolds as much as he could.

“A lot of the lines that Ryan Reynolds has were just a result of Wesley not being there. We would all just think of things for him to say and then cut to Wesley’s face not doing anything because that’s all we could get from him.”

Further in an interview with Première Magazine when his Deadpool was out, Ryan Reynolds was very quick to deny his return in any potential Blade sequel. Although the actor has repeatedly stated that he won’t play any other comic book roles other than Deadpool, it can be said that Snipes’ behavior is also a major reason for his denial. It was also reflected in Reynolds’ comments about The Expendables 3 actor.

What was Ryan Reynolds’ take on Wesley Snipes’ behavior on set?

During an interview with IGN, Ryan Reynolds was very open to confessing that Snipes was the exact polar opposite of his personality. Even after reportedly not having a very good time with the star, the Free Guy actor had “utmost respect” for Wesley Snipes.

Reynolds also added that there was a moment where he was speaking to his co-star Jessica Biel about Snipes’ relationship with him. He admitted that he was unaware of the fact that the cameras were rolling as a result of which the scene came into the final cut.

“There’s a moment in the movie where I look up at Jessica and I swear to God, I didn’t even know the cameras were rolling anymore and I say, ‘He hates me, doesn’t he?’ And she’s like, ‘Yeah.’ I’m just saying this about my relationship as Ryan Reynolds to this guy, and it works. The ad libs are just born of that.”

The 46-year-old actor also revealed that it was challenging for him to work with Snipes. A similar comment was also made by the director David S. Goyer who described the movie as a “tortured production”.

While Ryan Reynolds is soon set to make his MCU appearance in the much anticipated Deadpool 3, the Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali is currently under halt due to the Writer’s Strike.
