Why None of Tiger Woods’s Sun Day Red Apparel Have His Iconic TW Logo?

The Tiger Woods and Nike breakup was the pinnacle of the 2024 season as more than two decades of partnership ended. Nike wished the best for the 15-time major championship, and Mr. T promised an apparel line of his own. He also introduced the newer era of Tiger Woods clothes in the name of Sun Day Red. However, SDR clothes were missing the iconic TW logo, which has been a symbol for Woods’s fanbase per se.

During the press conference of the Genesis Invitational which was the first competitive event of Woods after the 2023 Masters, the 48-year-old was asked about the logo, to which he shockingly replied, “I don’t want it back; I have moved on.” It was a bold move by the 82-time PGA Tour winner when the entire golf community always knew the TW logo as the Tiger Woods brand. But even if Woods wanted to use TW on Sun Day Red, could he? The answer is a little complicated.

Woods’s company, the ETW Corps, still holds the trademark for the TW logo, which was patented in the 2000s with the United States Patent and Trademark. However, there might be legal issues with Nike that may hinder Woods from using TW on SDR clothes, as per the reports from Front Office Sports. For example, when Roger Federer parted ways with Nike, he fought for two years to get back his ‘RF’ logo that he now uses on Uniqlo clothes. Kawhi Leonard filed a lawsuit for his ‘Klaw’ logo and ended up losing the copyright to Nike and couldn’t use it anymore with New Balance.

So, in the end, it all depends on the contractual clauses between Tiger Woods and Nike. And maybe that was the reason why Woods did not bother claiming the logo and went forward with a newer style. But what is the new Woods logo?

What does Tiger Woods’s Sun Day Red logo mean?

It was an exciting evening for the Tiger Woods supporters as the legendary pro was making a return to the greens after withdrawing from the 2023 Masters and breaking the 27-year-old partnership with Nike for his new brand. There were murmurs about what the new logo would be, and the 48-year-old pro did not disappoint with his design.

Collaborating with TaylorMade, who also sponsors his clubs, Woods displayed a tiger with 15 stripes. If you guessed it right, yes, they represented the 15 majors Mr. T has won in his lifetime. However, Woods wanted to ruin this logo. Before the 2024 PGA Championship, the 82-time PGA Tour winner appeared on the Today Show with Carson Daly.

He revealed his wishes to ruin the SDR logo despite the trademark. Woods said, “My goal is to ruin the logo. I want to keep ruining the logo. If the trademark is this, then my job is to ruin it.” Although he could not add the 16th stripe to the SDR logo in 2024, Woods still had high hopes that he may do so in the future.
