“I want it to be better than ever”: Hugh Jackman Is Getting in the Best Shape of His Life for Deadpool 3

X-Men star Hugh Jackman reveals his plans to get into the best shape of his life for his return as Wolverine in Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3.

Hugh Jackman shared his plans to get into the best shape of his life for his role as Wolverine in Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3.

While appearing on the Empire Film Podcast, Jackman discussed reprising his famous X-Men role for the first time since 2017’s Logan. After the actor completes his run of The Music Man on Broadway, he has planned to hit the gym to prepare for his upcoming role in Deadpool 3. “I’m doing eight shows a week right now, so I’m only lifting weights three times a week,” he said. “But I’ll be getting into it once or twice a day as soon as [The Music Man] is done in a month. I want it to be better than ever, to be in better shape than ever, more able to do things than ever. I just get the added incentive of taking Ryan Reynolds out each day.”

Jackman further discussed the relationship between Wolverine and Deadpool on-screen, saying that the two were “opposites, hate each other.” He continued, “I’m just talking from my perspective, [Logan’s] frustrated by him, wants to be a million miles away from him or wants to punch him in the head. Unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot.”

Hugh Jackman Returns as Wolverine

The 54-year-old actor first appeared as Wolverine in the original X-Men film in 2000 and 2017’s Logan was meant to be his final appearance as the character. However, the actor stated that he started to regret stepping down as the famous X-Men after he watched the first Deadpool movie. “I was 20 minutes into watching Deadpool, and I had just announced, literally, a few weeks before that Logan was going to be my last [time playing Wolverine], which I fully intended. And then I was like, ‘Uh-oh,'” he said.

In a November interview, Jackman stated that he would be playing an angrier, grumpier version of Wolverine in Deadpool 3. “And he’s going to take a lot of free shots at Ryan Reynolds — physically, that is,” he said. The third Deadpool movie will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though the film will be rated R like the previous two films. Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy promised that even in the MCU, the movie will still be “raw,” “gritty” and “grounded.”

Jackman has hinted that Wolverine may appear via timeline-hopping technology that was seen in Avengers: Endgame and Loki. Similarly, it was reported that Owen Wilson will reprise his Loki role as Time Variance Authority special agent Mobius M. Mobius, though this has not been confirmed by Marvel or Disney.

Deadpool 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 8, 2024.
