A CARPET python with jaws of steel has put on a stunning show for a Queensland family as it slowly made a meal of a possum.
SOMETHING about the noise the birds were making in the tree that made Peter McMaster put down his mower and look up.
“There was a real commotion and I thought ‘I bet that’s a snake’,” he said.
When he looked up he couldn’t believe his eyes: “There it was, a possum hanging from the tree — on the end of a snake.”
The first thing Mr McMaster did was yell out to his children to come and witness the incredible spectacle unfolding in the backyard of their home in Tingalpa, South Brisbane.
“It was just an unbelievable thing to see, especially for the kids,” he told news.com.au.
Mr McMaster said the predator was one of four or five carpet pythons that he’s sighted around his family’s property over the past month or so.

“A few weeks ago we found one that had semi-constricted a flying fox,” he said. “I’d like to think it as the same one that got the possum but we can’t be sure.”
Mr McMaster said his family had just returned from being on a cruise when they encountered the stunning sight on Sunday, speculating the snake had gotten more adventurous during their time away.
“We haven’t got a name for it but I think after this it deserves one. I’ll leave it up to the kids to come up with one.”
It’s not the first time Australia has stunned the world with pictures of bizarre wildlife encounters.
