Manchester United ace Bruno Fernandes responds to claims he aimed sly dig at Cristiano Ronaldo

Bruno Fernandes has hit back at claims suggesting his post-match comments about Manchester United’s improvements this season were aimed at former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese ace scored in the Reds’ impressive 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, with the midfielder levelling proceedings after Jack Grealish opened the scoring for the away side. Erik ten Hag’s men went on to win the derby thanks to Marcus Rashford’s late strike.

After the game, Fernandes, during an interview with BT Sport, spoke about how United were now a ‘team’ after previously being a group of ‘individuals’.

“[We] used to be individuals, now we are a team. You can see a proper team that works for each other,” said Fernandes.

Several people on social media suggested that the 28-year-old was having a dig at Ronaldo, who left Old Trafford in November following his controversial interview with Piers Morgan. However, Fernandes strongly denied those claims on Instagram.

Posting on his story, he wrote: “I know that is difficult to see Manchester United doing well, [but I] don’t have anything to [say] about us on the news apart [from] good things.

“Don’t use my name to attack Cristiano. Cristiano was part of our team for half the season and as I said in many interviews, everyone since Liverpool is being amazing and acting like a proper team and you can see the results. We carry on!”

Fernandes played alongside Ronaldo on 51 occasions at United, with the pair combining for three goals during their time together at Old Trafford.

The Reds defeated Liverpool in the third game of the campaign, which came after losses to Brighton and Brentford respectively. Since then, United have lost just twice in 15 league games and have won their last nine matches in all competitions. Ten Hag’s men have also climbed up to third in the Premier League table.

United now sit just one point behind Pep Guardiola’s side following the win at Old Trafford, and just six behind Arsenal ahead of Sunday’s North London derby.
