The option to take a ride proved too appealing for these slow sea lions as the wintry water grew colder by the day. The gigantic monsters took over this small sailing boat in the Pacific Northwest of America, and were so large that the prow was nearly buried.
The daring hijacking was captured on film and published on social media. A third sea lion was later seen attempting to board the vessel in the Puget Sound near Olympia, Washington, only to realize that there was no room on deck.
Californian sea lions can grow to reach eight feet long and weigh an average of 660 pounds. The unknown owner of the boat will only have to weigh it to see if it survived the animals’ visit. Joshua Phillips was onboard a boat in Puget Sound off the coast of Washington when he observed something unusual: a couple of big sea lions casually doing the same.
The enormous sea monsters apparently chose to rest their flippers for a moment while out for a swim by reclining on top of someone’s (relatively tiny) yacht. As you can see, the boat wasn’t designed to carry such a large group of people. Though it’s unclear who owns the boat or how long the pair stayed, this one-of-a-kind experience puts the enormity of these beasts into perspective.
Sea lions may weigh up to 2,500 pounds and grow to be 11 feet long, which is a fascinating fact that can either float or nearly sink your boat.
