John Terry sends a warning to Graham Potter that ‘results are not good enough’

Graham Potter is having a difficult time as Chelsea manager despite a promising start, and ex-Blues captain John Terry has emphasized that things must improve under the new management.

John Terry has warned Chelsea manager Graham Potter “results are not good enough” after the Blues dropped two more points in their draw against West Ham on Saturday.

Joao Felix’s opener was cancelled out by an equaliser from West Ham’s former Chelsea full-back Emerson Palmieri at the London Stadium. The result means Chelsea have won just once this calendar year and only four times in all competitions since mid-October.

Pressure is beginning to mount on Potter already despite him being just five months into the role after replacing Thomas Tuchel in September. Chelsea’s extravagant spending in the January transfer window has only added to the scrutiny after a £323million outlay, and now former Blues legend Terry has offered his two cents.

Asked by a fan on Instagram whether he had played any part in Chelsea appointing Potter, Terry replied: “Absolutely not. I tweeted that I loved watching Brighton play and his style of play.”

In the quotes, as reported by The Sun, Terry – who is back working in the academy at Chelsea – also added: “I have nothing to do with the first team. I’m work[ing] with the [Under] 18s and 21s and love my role.

“Clearly results are not good enough and we need to get a settled team.”

In fairness to Potter, finding a settled team has been a difficult task in itself due to a mammoth injury list and the arrival of eight new players in January. Along with Felix, who joined on loan, Chelsea have also stumped up a British record fee to sign Enzo Fernandez, as well as £88m for winger Mykhaylo Mudryk.

All three started in the draw with West Ham, where Chelsea saw a penalty appeal denied despite what appeared to be a clear handball by Tomas Soucek. Speaking after the match, Potter quipped: “It was a good save. You need your goalkeeper sometimes to give you the points.

“It looks like one of those that if it was given it wouldn’t have been overturned, but obviously it wasn’t given.”

He added: “You have to earn your luck. We can’t complain or wait for luck to turn for us, we have to keep working. It looked quite a handball and, like I said, I didn’t know Tomas could get down so easily and save like that.”
