Tottenham Hotspur have received backing for their potential double raid on Atletico Madrid for Jan Oblak and Yannick Carrasco.
Oblak has been linked with Tottenham for a while as they look for a replacement for current starting goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris. The Slovenia international has been established as one of the best in the world in his position for a number of years.
Lloris has come under pressure due to some errors this season. Besides, he is at an age where Tottenham might need to move on from him.
Therefore, there is a chance that Tottenham could complete a high-profile swoop for Oblak, whose future with Atletico is unclear despite him being under contract until 2028.
Recently, it emerged that Spurs could also take winger Carrasco away from Atletico in a double operation.
Now, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has enthusiastically responded to the rumours – especially in the case of Oblak.
Robinson told Football Insider: “Oblak would be an incredible signing.
“I’ve been an admirer of his for a long time. He is the next level of goalkeeper that Spurs need.
“Oblak has been a big part of Atletico Madrid’s success over the past few years. I’m surprised that his name does not get linked with more Premier League clubs.
“If they could get Oblak and Carrasco that would be even better. There is clearly a strong relationship between the two clubs.
“If Oblak and Carrasco are available and are keen to come to the Premier League, Spurs should be at the front of the queue.”
Tottenham plant seeds for Atletico business
How high Tottenham will be willing to bid for the pair remains to be seen. They are both players of high pedigree, especially Oblak.
As Robinson alluded to in his interview, Tottenham and Atletico seem to be on favourable terms. Recently, Spurs allowed Matt Doherty to join the side from the Spanish capital on a free transfer.
It followed the sale of Kieran Trippier from Spurs to Los Rojiblancos a few years earlier.
Therefore, they may have laid the groundworks for future deals between the two clubs. And if Tottenham can somehow get Oblak and Carrasco, they would be reaping the rewards.
Neither player has featured in the Premier League before, but have earned their good reputations from what they have achieved in Spain. If Spurs could get hold of them, it would provide them with a boost.
As a former goalkeeper himself, Robinson is well placed to recommend Oblak as a smart target. In truth, the 30-year-old is of a level that it doesn’t take only people who have played in his position to recognise his talent.
Spurs fans will no doubt be keeping a watchful eye on any developments regarding their chances of signing the pair.
