“Mr Cruise knows exactly what he’s doing.”
Mission: Impossible actress Hayley Atwell has confirmed that Dead Reckoning Part One is still on course for its summer 2023 release.
A newcomer to the Ethan Hunt film series, Atwell portrays an “ambiguous” character named Grace in the seventh Mission movie, alongside other fresh faces in Rob Delaney, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff and Cary Elwes.
While exclusively chatting to Digital Spy, Atwell supplied some context to the blockbuster’s long delay, after it started production all the way back in September 2020.
“Well, that’s not by any accident,” the Marvel star began. “Mr Cruise knows exactly what he’s doing. He wants these films to absolutely galvanise the audience into just being totally transported. And we won’t stop until it’s ready, and it delivers.
“Tom is very much an advocate of the audience being…this is for the audience. This is to delight them, and to thrill them, and to move them.”
Atwell went on to reveal that the “absolutely enormous” ambition for both Dead Reckoning entries was apparent immediately.
“Similar to what we saw with what he did brilliantly with Top Gun [Maverick] and how he absolutely made sure every detail was right for it, and perfect, and was able to deliver not only the film that lovers of the original wanted and expected, but to also bring in an entirely new audience to that movie and to that character.
“What’s been really strange is to be filming something for three years without an audience seeing it. Because I’m sitting here, going, ‘I’m loving it.’ But when I’m not on set, people are like, ‘What are you doing? Why is it taking so long?’ Or people going, ‘Are you working on anything at the moment? I haven’t seen you for a while.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, yeah! Yeah!'”
“And then I go on set, and it’s so clear to me why it’s taking as long as it’s taken, because we filmed throughout the pandemic. That was a huge, huge challenge that we were meeting every day, and meeting successfully,” she further recalled.
The Agent Carter star spent the next few minutes hailing Cruise for his “commitment” to “delivering at the absolute highest level”.
“It makes me, as a performer, feel incredibly safe, like I know I’m in safe hands. I know what this franchise is. I also know what his ambitions for it are.”
The countdown is on.
