While promoting her upcoming movie Babylon, Margot Robbie indicated that her Pirates of the Caribbean project was no longer happening, though producer Jerry Bruckheimer insists its still alive.
Robbie, 32, told Vanity Fair in November they were developing a ‘female-led’ Pirates of the Caribbean story, ‘which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,’ referring to Disney, the studio that launched the franchise with 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
However, Bruckheimer, 79, insisted in a wide-ranging interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the project is still very much ‘alive.’

Bruckheimer said they were developing two different Pirates of the Caribbean movies, ‘the one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast.’
‘The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully we’ll get both of them,’ Bruckheimer said.
When Bruckheimer was asked about Robbie’s recent comments that the project isn’t happening, the producer said, ‘It’s alive for me. It’s alive for Disney.’

‘I’m sure she was disappointed it didn’t go first — or maybe not because she’s very busy, so it might be a blessing to push this a bit,’ Bruckheimer said.
Ultimately, though, the producer said, ‘We believe we’ll get it made. It’s a very strong story.’
The project was first announced back in late June 2020, when it was revealed that Robbie was teaming up with her Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson on this female-led Pirates of the Caribbean project.

While little is known about the story, it was said that it won’t be a spin-off of the original movie franchise starring Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, but instead, ‘a wholly original story with new characters under the moniker.’
Still, there has been little to no movement on the project since then, though it seems at least Bruckheimer appears confident the film will see the light of day.
The other Pirates project is said to be a full Pirates of the Caribbean reboot with a younger cast, which was being written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and veteran Pirates franchise writer Ted Elliott.

Johnny Depp starred as the beloved Captain Jack Sparrow in five hit films, which have grossed $4.5 billion at the box office.
When asked if Disney would ever bring him back to star in the franchise after all of the controversy surrounding his trial with Amber Heard, Bruckheimer said he couldn’t answer that question.
‘You’d have to ask them. I can’t answer that question. I really don’t know. I would love to have him in the movie. He’s a friend, a terrific actor and it’s unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do,’ Bruckheimer said.
