BYD’s new high-end brand, Yangwang, has announced that the U9 supercar will be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 18. Making this announcement via its Weibo page, Yangwang also revealed some updated images of the EV supercar.
Yangwang (仰望) is a new high-end luxury EV brand under BYD, and the Yangwang U9 was unveiled in a surprise move by BYD on January 5 alongside the Yangwang U8 SUV. CarNewsChina had earlier reported spy shots of the U9 on Chinese roads.
The latest images show some changes to the car’s exterior. Besides the most notable change in color, the side skirts have been extended, and there’s an eye-catching electric spoiler that was not present in the concept version. Also, the headlight design, which received a lot of criticism from Chinese netizens, seems to have been adjusted. The most noticeable thing is the horizontal dot matrix LED taillights, but the exaggerated diffusers are also trying hard to steal the show.
BYD calls the design language of the Yangwang brand “Gate of Time and Space.”
The Yangwang U9 stands on BYD’s new Yisifang EV platform. It features four electric motors with a total output of 1100 horsepower and 1280 Nm. The maximum power of a single motor is 275 hp and the maximum torque is 320 Nm.
BYD stated earlier that the U9 could achieve a zero-to-hundred acceleration in 2 seconds. That is very fast indeed, but the upcoming Aion Hyper SSR is 0.1 seconds faster. The U9 will get the latest BYD Blade battery pack, with at least 100 kWh for a CLTC driving range of about 700 kilometers.
The Yangwang U9 electric supercar will launch on the Chinese car market late this year. The price will start at around one million yuan or $150,000. While that’s a lot of money for a BYD or any Chinese car, it is still a very good deal for 1100 horsepower.
