There are more details about The Marvels’ villain after the first trailer, as Zawe Ashton’s character holds some significant connections to the MCU.
The Marvels‘ villain is a mysterious character with strong connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Captain Marvel sequel arrives in Phase 5 as part of the Multiverse Saga, but its main story does not revolve around alternate universes and variants. The Marvels follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) as their lives and powers become entangled. For as much as the movie might focus on the trio forming relationships, repairing existing ones, and more, they will also all work together to fight a villain. Questions still largely remain about who The Marvels‘ villain is and what they want.
Marvel Studios has finally offered some clues about the next foe for Captain Marvel thanks to The Marvels trailer. In addition to showing the first look at the team-up between Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel, it also briefly teases the threat that brings them together. They are shown fighting various enemies, but the footage also reveals the first look at Zawe Ashton’s villain character. While some information is still a secret, new details about The Marvels‘ villain have been revealed thanks to what the trailer revealed.
Zawe Ashton Plays The Marvels’ Villain (But Her Name Isn’t Known)
Zawe Ashton was cast as The Marvels‘ villain back in early 2021, which is when reports first surfaced that the Velvet Buzzsaw and The Handmaid’s Tale actress was joining the MCU. The initial news did not come with any character details for the role other than confirming that she will be the main villain of the Captain Marvel sequel. Marvel Studios eventually confirmed the piece of casting, but Kevin Feige and the rest of the Marvel crew refrained from confirming her character identity. The mystery about Zawe Ashton’s villain name has continued for over two years, and even The Marvels‘ teaser trailer leaves her identity in question.
Zawe Ashton’s The Marvels Villain Is Seemingly A Kree Accuser
The brief look at The Marvels‘ villain in the trailer does indicate that she is a Kree Accuser. They are an elite military unit for the Kree Empire that has appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel. The reason to believe that Zawe Ashton’s character is a Kree Accuser comes from the hammer she is seen holding. This weapon is known as a Cosmi-Rod or Universal Weapon. Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) previously used one of them in the movies. They are powerful weapons capable of concussive blasts and even holding Infinity Stones.
This is not the same Cosmi-Rod that Ronan used, as the Guardians of the Galaxy destroyed his. It has been established in the comics that there are multiple Universal Weapons that the Kree Accusers can use. While the MCU has never featured more than one at a time, it is possible that The Marvels‘ villain acquires a new Cosmi-Rod after Ronan’s demise in Guardians of the Galaxy. Considering the militant portrayal of the Accusers in the comics and how Ronan used the weapon to murder Nova Corps members, Zawe Ashton’s character having the Kree hammer poses a big challenge for Carol, Monica, and Kamala.
