Rory McIlroy was indeed one of the greatest golfers during his prime. But there was one other thing that made him the talk of the town. The Northern Irishman was very experimental when it came to choosing his hairstyles. During his young days as a golfer, he tried out all sorts of styles!
One of his famous looks was the long curly hair that he had grown. He made an appearance in the Little Interview, a DP World Tour original. He was even made fun of by one of his younger fans, Billy, during the interview. As per him, Rory didn’t make golf look cool. And well, it looks like Billy wasn’t the only one thinking that.
Michelle Wie West—who’s left a legacy in women’s golf, by achieving so much in her eighteen-year-long career—appeared in the latest episode of The Scoop. And as it turns out, she too thinks Rory McIlroy could not make golf look cool. Instead, she believes someone else did. Yes, Rickie Fowler. The orange-clad golfer has always been pretty particular about his hair and beard and everything else. And as per West, he made the sport look cool after the Tiger era.
The LPGA star, in the interview, talking about the post, Woods era in golf said, “Post Tiger… but like the Rickie Justin era; I don’t think Rory was cool back in the day with the hair and I can’t imagine him being cool.”
Well, Rickie Fowler has indeed made some bold fashion choices while stepping on the greens. Be it his unique outfits, or the statement haircuts he had.
Rickie Fowler opted for the USA haircut at the 2014 Ryder Cup
A few months ahead of the 2014 Ryder Cup, Rickie Fowler thought he would do something patriotic to make a commendable appearance in the event. He decided to get ‘USA’ shaved on the back of his head.
$50, a walk to the ‘You Are Next Barbershop’ in Jupiter, Florida, and a few hours later, he had exactly that! Additionally, he also had the letters dyed in the colors red, white, and blue to express his emotion. A true patriotic move.
The one thing Fowler overlooked, though, was the amount of commotion this move would create. Photos of his new haircut went viral the moment he disembarked from the team charter at Edinburgh Airport. Reactions flooded social media, with commentary erupting across all platforms. When he arrived at the Centenary Course to begin Ryder Cup preparations, both teammates and opponents couldn’t help but laugh at his fresh look. Two years later, he opted for a normal haircut at the 2016 Rio Olympics, which also ended up creating a lot of fuss.
