Piers Morgan admits he’s ‘never been happier’ after backtracking on Mikel Arteta demands

Piers Morgan has been made to eat his own words after previously calling for Mikel Arteta to be sacked as Arsenal manager last season.

The club’s dominance so far this season has seen Arsenal cement their place as Premier League leaders ahead of Sunday’s North London derby, and Morgan admits he’s ‘never been happier’ in being wrong.

Morgan – an outspoken Arsenal fan – previously demanded that the Gunners boss should be sacked as recently as May last year following Arsenal’s 3-0 humiliation against their arch rivals Spurs.

At the time, Arteta had just signed a new three-year deal with the club, with Morgan then describing the contract extension as a ‘reward for abject failure’.

Less than a year later, the Spaniard has revolutionised the club, with Arsenal targeting the Premier League title and still competing in the Europa League and FA Cup.

Morgan has shown he is much like all overemotional football fans, and writing in The Sun admitted he was ‘completely wrong’ about Arteta, saying: ‘First, I was completely wrong about Arteta. More pleasingly, I was also completely wrong about Spurs and Conte.

‘And as we head into another North London derby this Sunday, I’m happy to admit I’ve never been happier to make a predictive a*** of myself.

‘Arsenal’s transformation from mid-table mediocrity to a properly competitive team again has been stunning to watch,’ he added.

‘And it’s all down to Arteta, who if I’d had my way would have been abruptly sent packing eight months ago.

‘The Spaniard has shown he most definitely does have what it takes, and we saw his progression first-hand in Amazon’s All or Nothing documentary series about the club, said Morgan.

The 40-year-old ex-Arsenal and Everton midfielder has guided his side of young superstars to a five point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

The addition of title-winning stars Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko in the summer appears to have instilled a winning identity within the squad, while Arteta has undoubtedly improved as a manager.

Morgan’s admission of error says something about the belief Arsenal fans have in this squad. Should City lose to Manchester United on Saturday, then the Gunners could find themselves with a more-than-healthy nine point lead atop the Premier League.
