Bruno Fernandes urged fans not to misconstrue his post-Manchester derby comments and attack Cristiano Ronaldo

Bruno Fernandes has posted a rant on social media after feeling his comments about Manchester United‘s success this season were wrongly interpreted as an attack on former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fernandes has been widely quoted telling BT Sport after the Red Devils’ 2-1 derby win: ‘[We] used to be individuals, now we are a team. You can see a proper team that works for each other.’

This was seen by many as a dig at Ronaldo, who left United in controversial fashion last year, but the midfielder has strongly denied this in a rant on Instagram.

He ranted on Instagram after the game as he felt his post-match comments had been twisted

‘I know that is difficult to see Manchester United doing well, [but I] don’t have anything to [say] about us on the news apart good things,’ he said in a story posted on Saturday.

There have been rumours of a rift between the Portugal teammates before, when they appeared to offer each other frosty greetings shortly after Ronaldo’s explosive interview that led to his departure from Old Trafford.

Fernandes continued: ‘Don’t use my name to attack Cristiano. Cristiano was part of our team for half the season and as I said in many interviews, everyone since Liverpool is being amazing and acting like a proper team and you can see the results. We carry on!’

United beat Liverpool in the third game of this season after a horrendous start, and have since lost just twice in 15 games on their way to third in the table and whispers of a title challenge.

Saturday’s win over Man City was among their best so far, as Fernandes scored the equaliser for ten Hag’s men in controversial fashion as many felt Marcus Rashford interfered with play from an offside position in the build-up.

The England forward frustrated Cityzens fans further when he bagged a winner four minutes later to take his season tally to 16.

United sit just one point behind their local rivals after the result, and just six behind Arsenal ahead of tomorrow’s North London derby.

Fernandes and co will next be in action when they travel to 12th placed Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
