Lilli, who was born with six legs on a farm in Weissenburg, Sᴡɪᴛᴢᴇʀʟᴀɴᴅ, is making a full recovery in an Alpine animal sanctuary after a successful operation.
After being born on February 14 in the Simmental region with two additional legs attached to her shoulder, the newborn cow gained international attention.
Veterinarians initially believed she wouldn’t live. But because she was so full of life, her owner could not bear to put her down as she began to flee the mountain pastures. Instead of putting her to sleep, Andreas Knutti chose to sell her for £1,420 to an animal lover who was willing to cover the cost of her surgery.
On June 14, Vets in Bern performed surgery. They removed the legs during the four-hour, and discovered a curvature in the cow’s vertebrae. However, they claimed that she had no disabilities and that she had since made a full recovery.
The calf has now been relocated to the Gut Aiderbichl, an Alpine animal sanctuary facility in the Aᴜsᴛʀɪᴀn region of Salzburg’s Henndorf am Wallersee.
According to Michael Aufhauser, owner of Gut Aiderbichl, Lilli is healing from the surgery and has regained a healthy appetite. She is content, inquisitive, and enjoys getting to know the fellow cows.
