The death of the dinosaurs was just one of five global events that saw millions of species wiped out. How do these events happen? And how can we stop it happening again? Can we stop another mass extinction? (Image credit: Getty Images) For the last 10,000 years, Earth has been in the midst of yet another extinction event that is rapidly removing animals from our planet. Scientists define a mass extinction as around three-quarters of all species dying out over a short geological time, which is anything less than 2.8 million years, according to The Conversation(opens in new tab). Right now, humans…
The impact crater is the second discovered in China. (Image credit: NASA Earth Observatory image by Lauren Dauphin, using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey.) A crescent-shaped crater in Northeast China holds the record as the largest impact crater on Earth that formed in the last 100,000 years. Prior to 2020, the only other impact crater ever discovered in China was found in Xiuyan county of the coastal province of Liaoning, according to a statement from the NASA Earth Observatory(opens in new tab). Then, in July 2021, scientists confirmed that a geological structure in the Lesser Xing’an mountain range had…
The mating dance of sandhill cranes Sandhill Crane Cranes are elegant dancers and have one of the most well-known bird mating rituals. Dancing peaks during mating season but can occur any time of year. Experts do not completely understand the behavior, but it seems to play a role in bonding. During their courting rituals, sandhill cranes vocalize, dance, jump, move their heads and extend their wings, which can stretch to 7 feet wide. Mated sandhill cranes also sing a unison call during courtship. Curiously, young birds also dance—this is believed to be an important part of their motor development. Humans…

A severe geomagnetic storm from a huge hole in the sun’s corona caused a massive disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field. The surprise event sparked auroras as far south as Alabama and northern California. Photographer Dakota Snider caught the auroras from his airplane window, while his fellow passengers slept early Friday morning. (Image credit: Dakota Snider) The strongest solar storm to hit Earth for six years sparked stunning auroras across the U.S., with intense light displays appearing as far south as Alabama and Northern California. Yet no one saw it coming. The March 24 solar storm was the result of a “stealth” coronal…
The life of a Jenner… Kendall Jenner might only be 21-years-old, but she already has the kind of life (and house!) most people only dream about. The reality star bought the home, which previously belonged to Hollywood actors John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, in 2016. It has six bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms. Plus, the house has three floors and is a whopping 4,800 square…
The mysterious 6,500-year-old burial of a woman and several arrowheads in northern France may reveal details of how women were regarded in that society during the Neolithic period, or New Stone Age, a new study finds. The researchers investigated giant graves known as “long barrows” — large earthen mounds, often hundreds of feet long and sometimes retained by wooden palisades that have since rotted away. Of the 19 human burials in the Neolithic cemetery at Fleury-sur-Orne in Normandy, the team analyzed the DNA of 14 individuals; but only one was female. The woman was buried with “symbolically male” arrows in her grave,…

The young duo featured in several episodes while they were still children and had much of their adolescence documented across the series too. But it was only…
Torghatten is a 258-meter mountain that rises on Torget Island, a wedge of land located in the municipality of Brønnøy in Nordland county, Norway. It is a granite peak that became famous for the hole located right in its center, a natural tunnel 160 meters long, 20 meters wide and 35 meters high originating from the erosion of water and ice during the last ice age. Of course, there are plenty of explanations for this phenomenon of a hole that spans the rocky summit from side to side, and these include a few legends. One such legend explains that the hole came about after a troll fell…
Sorvagsvatn, also called Leitisvatn, is located in the northern part of Vagar, an island located in the Danish archipelago of the Faroe Islands. The lake is known for the singularity of its position, close to a precipice on the Atlantic which from its rocky plateau appears to overlook the ocean. In reality, it is a magnificent optical illusion. Its elongated shape and the wonderful plays of light, influencing perspective, help to deceive the human eye, giving the impression of a surreal inclination. This natural beauty spans an area of 1.5 square miles and is the largest lake in the archipelago. Despite appearing to…

The unusual contents of the statue were discovered in the 1990s when the statue underwent restoration Scientific tests have revealed that an ancient Buddhist statue contains a 1,000-year – old mummified monk’s perfectly preserved remains in what is thought to be the only such example in the world. The monk, who is sitting in the lotus position, is thought to have starved himself to death in an act of extreme spiritual devotion in China or Tibet in the 10th century. His preserved remains were displayed in his monastery. Some 200 years later, perhaps after his remains started to deteriorate, his…
Similar situations have produced auroras as far south as New York and Idaho. Red auroras photographed in Canada’s Quebec on Feb. 16, 2023. (Image credit: Mike MacLellan) A “hole” in the sun’s atmosphere may produce a dazzling light show on Earth in the coming days. A moderate aurora watch is in effect Friday (March 24) for higher latitudes of Earth due to a coronal hole, an opening in the sun’s magnetic field, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(opens in new tab) (NOAA). When these holes open in the corona, the sun’s upper atmosphere, they allow an increased flow of the charged-particle stream known as the solar wind.…

There is no celebrity who is a bigger fan of sheer looks than Kendall Jenner. She’s donned completely see-through outfits on red carpets, catwalks and in her everyday street style. Kenny has always been incredibly body positive and loves showing off her curves. That has led to her often being the most talked-about star at an event when she arrives wearing an outfit where it’s totally evident that she’s braless. From her very first major runway show in 2014, the model wore a sheer V-neck shirt with nothing underneath as she walked for designer Marc Jacobs. “My biggest concern was definitely falling. And then my tits…
Archaeologists found skeletal remains of over more than 240 people, from beneath a former department store in Pembrokeshire in Wales, UK among remnants of a medieval priory. The discovery has been described as “hugely significant” by experts. They believe the site is that of a priory named St Saviour’s, which dates to about 1256. In addition, experts who stated…
Albatrosses mainly tend to mate with one partner for life. Typically, 1% to 3% of albatross couples separate annually, but climate change has risen that figure to a rate of up to 8%. Researchers analyzed data covering more than 15,000 albatross breeding pairs over 15 years. Food scarcity is causing the birds to return late for mating season, which decreases the chance of successfully hatching a chick By mating with the same partner each year, the albatross couples build trust, communication and coordination to help them raise demanding chicks successfully. The sinking of the Titanic has been the subject of many books, articles, and motion pictures. We are all familiar with the fact that it sank when it collided with an iceberg. However, an American meteorologist believes that the aurora borealis , better known as the Northern Lights, played a part in the Titanic sinking. This space weather event, as it is known, led to navigational and wireless problems that caused the Titanic to collide with an iceberg. The Titanic sinking story is old but new theories are not unusual for such an epic disaster. The RMS Titanic sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York…
